Student associations of the Department

Undergraduate Philosophy Student Association

The UPSA exists to advance the interests of all undergraduate philosophy students at the University of Ottawa. Academically, the UPSA actively participates at the Undergraduate Studies’ Committee, the Departmental Assembly, and the Faculty of Arts Council to ensure that the quality and variety of philosophy courses offered are adequate to meet the needs of all members. The UPSA publishes Hermes, the University of Ottawa’s Undergraduate Philosophy Journal, which includes submissions from students across Canada.

The Association acts in a social capacity, encouraging members to get to know one another and improve their university experience. The UPSA strives to integrate al members of the Philosophy department, bringing together undergraduate members, graduate students and faculty members. To this end, the UPSA holds a wide variety of social events ranging from informal and formal weekly philosophy discussions to the end of the semester Wine and Cheese gatherings in December and April.

The UPSA executive is an elected bilingual body, which meets weekly. All philosophy students, as well as those enrolled in the Ethics and Society programme, are welcome to attend. Meetings are usually held in the Philosophy Lounge in Arts 233. This Lounge is reserved exclusively for philosophy students, and serves as a socializing and study area.
